Healthy granola with oats and nuts in a bowl — contains FOS prebiotic fibre

What Is FOS Prebiotic — And Why It's In Every Kibi Kibi Granola

What is FOS prebiotic?

FOS (fructooligosaccharides) is a type of dietary fibre that passes through the small intestine undigested and feeds beneficial bacteria in the large intestine. It is classified as a prebiotic — meaning it feeds the good bacteria already living in your gut, rather than introducing new bacteria like a probiotic does. FOS occurs naturally in onions, garlic, bananas, and chicory root, and can be added to food products as a functional ingredient.

It's in every batch of Kibi Kibi Super Granola — specifically Tata Fossence, a certified FOS produced by Tata Chemicals from chicory root. Here's why we use it and what it actually does.

What does FOS prebiotic do?

When gut bacteria ferment FOS in the large intestine, they produce short-chain fatty acids — primarily butyrate, propionate, and acetate. These are not waste products. Butyrate is the primary energy source for the cells lining your colon and plays a role in maintaining gut wall integrity. Propionate is involved in regulating blood sugar and appetite signalling. Acetate is used throughout the body as an energy source.

The research on FOS is well-established. It has a solid evidence base for its effects on gut microbiome composition, bowel regularity, and mineral absorption — particularly calcium and magnesium.

What is the difference between a prebiotic and a probiotic?

A probiotic is a live microorganism — bacteria that you consume and that colonise your gut. A prebiotic is food for the bacteria already living there. Think of your gut microbiome as a garden. Probiotics are new plants. Prebiotics are fertiliser. FOS is fertiliser — it feeds and supports the existing microbial ecosystem rather than trying to introduce new species into it.

Why does FOS taste slightly sweet?

FOS has about 30–50% the sweetness of table sugar — mild, not intense. This is one of the reasons it works well in granola formulations. It contributes a gentle background sweetness that complements the date syrup without being cloying, and it adds fibre at the same time. In Kibi Kibi Super Granola, the FOS contributes meaningfully to the fibre content per serving — part of why our Fruit and Nut granola qualifies as 'high fibre' under FSSAI standards (6g or more per 45g serving, independently tested by SGS labs).

Why Tata Fossence specifically?

Tata Fossence is produced by Tata Chemicals using chicory root as the source material, through an enzymatic process that produces consistent FOS chains. It's food-grade, FSSAI-compliant, and produced under quality controls by a manufacturer with an established track record in Indian food ingredients. We use it because the supply chain is reliable, the quality is consistent, and the specification is documented — so we know exactly what we're adding per batch.

How much FOS is in Kibi Kibi granola?

Each 45g serving of Kibi Kibi Super Granola contains FOS at a level consistent with what research suggests is physiologically active — enough to feed gut bacteria meaningfully, not a trace amount added for label appeal. We don't publish the exact figure because FSSAI guidelines on prebiotic claims are still developing and we'd rather be accurate than specific in a way that becomes non-compliant as guidance evolves.

Is FOS safe? Are there any side effects?

FOS is safe for most people. One honest caveat: like all fermentable fibres, FOS can cause bloating and gas in some people — particularly those not used to high-fibre diets, or those with certain gut sensitivities like IBS. If you're increasing fibre intake, doing it gradually is sensible. For most people eating a varied diet, FOS at the levels in our granola is well-tolerated. If you have a diagnosed gut condition, check with your doctor before adding any new prebiotic fibre source to your regular diet.

Which Kibi Kibi products contain FOS?

All four Super Granola flavours contain Tata Fossence FOS: Chunky Chocolate, Fruit and Nut, Banana Cinnamon, and Mango Tango. Bliss Balls and Protein Balls do not contain FOS — they're date and nut based without the granola base that carries the FOS.

Why isn't every granola brand doing this?

Cost and complexity. FOS adds to the cost of goods. It requires sourcing from a specialist supplier, understanding the specification, and managing it as an ingredient with its own shelf life and storage requirements. Most granola brands are optimising for margin, and adding a functional ingredient that most consumers won't immediately notice on the shelf isn't an obvious commercial priority. We think it's worth it — it's genuinely useful and it's one of the clearest differentiators Kibi Kibi has in the Indian granola market.
